Service Monitor ReadMe

Instructions:

To have ServiceMon run automatically when you log on, simply create a shortcut and add ONE the following switches to the command line:

/STARTUP -- this automatically activates the monitoring and minimizes ServiceMon
/UNATTEND -- this performs the same steps as /Startup, but also places ServiceMon into unattended mode. All dialog boxes or other forms of user alerts are suppressed and written to the log file instead.

To add a service to the monitor list, just click "ADD", then type the name of the service. This must be the system proper name. For example, the IIS World Wide Web service is known to the system as 'w3svc'. Then, enter the name or IP address of the system on which the service is running. If you plan on using the monitor on a Win9x box, you must ensure that WMI is installed, and that none of the monitored services list 'localhost' or '127.0.01' -- service checking of services running on Win9x boxes is unsupported. You can however use a Win9x box to monitor multiple Win2K or NT4 boxes.

To delete a service, just click it and hit "Delete".

To Activate / Deactivate ServiceMon, just click the appropriate button. You can see the current state displayed in the text box below the "About" button.  ServiceMon will check the services in the order they appear on the list. If you want to change this (if, for example, one service depends upon another), then use the UP/DN buttons to change the order.

When you exit ServiceMon, the list of services and their order is automatically saved.

Log Files:

ServiceMon will log all errors and results to a file in its directory. A new log file is started each time ServiceMon is launched.

The most common error I can see peope making is forgetting to install WMI. You can download it from this link, or search for it on Microsoft's site. This download is only for NT 4. Windows 2000 already has WMI installed by default. After installing WMI, you do NOT need to reboot (even though the WMI installer will tell you that you do.) You can cancel the reboot message and begin using ServiceMon immediately.
